Resident Theatre Companies

Each year two professional theatre companies will be offered “residency” status at the Bakehouse Theatre. There is also one amateur resident group position which is permanently filled by Unseen Theatre Company.

This scheme is aimed at supporting emerging, and established professional South Australian artists with the support they require to get their shows up and running. Many new graduates in the industry have all the artistic skills required to put together a performance, but have limited funding and no real expertise or experience in Producing.

The Bakehouse itself has very limited funding but is able to offer its resident theatre groups a reduced theatre hire fee as well as in-kind support and advice relating to the administrative/producing/marketing side of actually making a production happen. It also gives these artists the support and experience they need to grow, and learn how to produce their shows themselves.

Added to their reduced rental, help and advice, the resident groups are also offered an “advisory” seat on the Board of the Bakehouse Theatre for the duration of their residency. This enables them to contribute to the running of the theatre itself and ensures that our Board is always listening to fresh ideas.

The residency status is re-negotiated each year so that if the companies feel that they have learned enough they can move on, and newly graduating artists can be given the opportunity to take their place in the next year. To qualify as a resident theatre company, groups will need to have their proposal approved by the Bakehouse and demonstrate a commitment and ability to produce two plays per year at the theatre.
