The Blackbox project is by Australian artists, for Australian audiences. It is a unique opportunity for our professional graduates and experienced artists to share their perspectives on life and views of the world with audiences who will appreciate not only the content, but the freshness and skill that these future stars can bring to the communication device that is live theatre.
In what Pamela Munt calls “a small step for South Australian artists and a giant leap for South Australian theatre” this project will align itself with what the other states have had for a long time. Victoria has La Mama, WA has The Blue Room, NSW has Tamarama Rock Surfers and Griffin theatre. Now SA has Black Box @ the Bakehouse.
With the support of free theatre rental, marketing and technical support, some production funding and the majority of the box office going to them, artists will be unconstrained by financial concerns and be able to devote all of their energies and talent to the shows themselves.
Black Box @ The Bakehouse will begin by presenting at least 8 shows during the second half of 2012 year and will hope to expand the programme in 2013. The quantity and quality of these shows will give artists not only the opportunity to present their own shows in a risk-free supportive environment, but will enable them to examine, compare and discuss their work with other like-minded artists who are also part of the programme. It will give new graduates in particular, (and also established artists), a link from their professional training to “real life” work in the industry, which can only improve both their skills, and in turn, our arts industry.
“If we were able to make this project an annual certainty, giving consistent on-going work to artists we would reap the benefits of not only innovative, creative shows for audiences, but of keeping our artists in South Australia” said Peter Green, Creative Producer. “In particular, it will give SA writers a much needed opportunity to finally see their plays on stage”.
