Lisette & Les Faux Manouches present L’Amour or Less
Inspired by some of the acts presented at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Cat Lawrence and Michael Baldwin have been putting together a program of songs which they felt lent themselves to a Euro-style café/cabaret treatment. They have constructed the character of Lisette who sees herself as Europhile.
Vocalist Cat Lawrence speaks of Lisette “as searching for love and gratification. Through songs and anecdotes, she tells of the highs and lows of her adventures and encounters in, and out, of love in France, Italy and Spain”.
Cat Lawrence and Michael Baldwin worked in The Jo Jump Band in the 1980s playing soul, r’n’b and jazz in many venues around Adelaide including regular Friday nights at the Festival Centre Fezbar. Cat left the band to tour the country and internationally as a singer/dancer with the big musicals Cats and Les Miserables following which she performed in the London West End production of Chicago with Ute Lemper, Joel Grey and Chita Rivera .
The name of the band backing Lisette derives from Michael’s enthusiasm for the gypsy swing music of artists like Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli and a number of their tunes are featured in L’Amour or Less.
