The Bakehouse Theatre Company presents
"The Drawer Boy"
A charmingly delicate comedy where one youth's self-discovery is the impetus for two old friends to re-examine their past.
Morgan and Angus - childhood friends and war veterans share a mysterious secret buried under a comfortable but hard working life on the land. Their routines are interrupted by the arrival of Miles - an ambitious city actor who stays with them to research farming life at first hand for a play that he is writing. What ensues is an achingly funny battle between age and experience, youth and ideals, city and country life. No-one knows just how much they are about to learn from each other as the lines blur between memory and reality, theatre and life.
Sometimes the journey is within.
SNIPPETS FROM REVIEWS:
"The Drawer Boy is a total triumph.....this must tour country areas or heads should roll!" - John Ovenden
"It's not often you get to see a piece of theatre that needs little but a fervent message to see it if you can. This lucky reviewer had that experience when attending "The Drawer Boy". It is a celbration of deep male friendship, its language is a joy and at times poetic. It's funny and charming, but it touches you somewhere deeper too. You'll only get the real thing by experiencint it, so to reiterate - see it if you can." Maggie Moore Adelaide - Theatre Guide
"This is a superb piece of work with Roger Newcombe nothing short of magnificent as the befuddled Angus. His final scenes..tear at the heart strings. Peter Green does a great job too as Morgan..Russell Hutchinson, as Miles, adds plenty of laughs. This might well be the best thing you see this year, so don't miss it." Barry Lenny - Rip It Up
"The Drawer Boy" is a beautifully crafted piece of theatre that speaks volumes in any language. Both Peter Green and Roger Newcombe are outstanding as the typical Aussie blokes on the land, more comfortable with tasks than emotions. Newcombe is exceptional as Angus..Green is equally excelent as the man-in-charge Morgan. Russell Hutchinson provides much of the humour. A touching and intricate theatrical performance which quietly wraps its emotional tendrils around the heart strings". Stephanie Johnson - Australian Stage On-Line
