A double bill. Two tales. Firstly, think Requiem for a Dream meets Weekend at Bernies. Well, kind of. Our protagonist is dead but that doesn't mean he can't make us laugh! Secondly, view two rooms with two women. One sane, the other insane. Both are utterly convinced. Something tremendous is about to happen.
The Adventures of Dead Jim
Meet Jim. He died horribly this morning in an alcohol and pill fuelled overdose. Which is a shame seeing as though he wasn't really a bad guy. It's now up to his two best friends to try and turn back the clock by using his lifeless corpse to tell his story and give him the freedom from addiction he never had. A kind of modern day fable, The Adventures of Dead Jim runs like Requiem for a Dream meets Weekend at Bernies. On ice. Well, not quite but you get our drift! An hilarious and very physical black comedy.
Directed by Dee Easton who brought us last year's hit The Drawer Boy as part of the Bakehouse Theatre's main season. A most talented cast including Kurt Murray, Paul Herbert and Sarah Hone with music brought to you from the brilliant Matthew Vecchio. Contemporary theatre that's firecrackingly good.
This Place by Nina Pearce
Next up is a This Place, a dynamic and intriguing new play getting it's debut here. Olivia and Eliza are two young, vibrant women who find themselves at odds with the world around them. Olivia is a frustrated sculptor trapped in her apartment by her own mocking lump of clay. Eliza lives in a psych ward and is at once haunted and blessed by visions that abound from every corner of her cramped hospital room. In the midst of it all is Olivia's happy-go-lucky partner Gareth who, by studying the minds of psych patients, finds himself to be Eliza's one ally in the otherwise suffocating ward.
Approached with warmth, insight and humour, This Place examines how the lines between sanity and insanity become decidedly blurred.
Directed by Tim Watts, This Place features an excellent local and interstate cast including Amy Handley, Nina Pearce and Gareth Yuen.
"Tell your friends you saw it first at the Adelaide Fringe in 2009 before it received widespread critical acclaim......the acting is tremendous, even Jim (played by Kurt Murray) is captivating - and remarkably animated for a dead guy.....the time flys" (Clare Peddie - Advertiser 4 March 09)

An amusing easy pill to swallow
All high school teachers should bring their students to see this show. Here's a comment from a grandmother who brought a teenager to see it:-
"My family and I attended your performance Saturday night 7-3-09 and I would like to say how much we all enjoyed it. My 14 year old Grandaughter was especially taken with the anti-drug message and said your play should be shown in schools instead of the lectures they all switch off from. Thank you for a very entertaining evening and I wish you all luck in the future."
