A city suburb, 2077.
Joan discovers a stranger from a foreign land in her flat. As soldiers patrol the streets outside she detains the intruder in her cellar, demanding an explanation.
The stranger's story changes her life forever. Soon Joan realises she too is an immigrant; an immigrant in her own country. Together, they seek a solution to their problem. Jack can offer them a new identity, a pass and a passage across the border to the North. But who is Jack and where will this transaction take them?
What follows is a journey of self-discovery and denial for all concerned.
Profound, dramatic, tragic and comic, this is the Australian premiere of The Under Room written by acclaimed U.K. playwright, Edward Bond.

SNIPPETS FROM REVIEWS:  (full reviews attached)

"Tautly directed by Corey McMahon with strong performances by Brad Williams, Kate Roxby and Nathaniel Davison, brave new theatre company five.point.one has found a timely play and reminded us that for unflinching theatre, Bond is still the name". Murray Bramwell - The Australian

"Director, Corey McMahon has taken on the immense challenge of bringing this complex challenging and extremely thought-provoking work to the stage. From the strong audience reaction it is most evident that he has succeeded. Brad Williams is truly magnificent.....this is a bravura performance and should certainly not be missed..Kate Roxby's performance is a thoughtful and intricate portrayal of growing terror and loss of control.....Nathaniel Davison completes the trio in a nicely balanced performance. - Barry Lenny - Glam Adelaide

"Director Corey McMahon's great skill is to present narrative clarity with emotional complexity - we know what is happening but we don't always know why. McMahon is assisted by a strong ensemble. Brad Williams ...is measured, passionate and has an inner core of dark sadness....Kate Roxby brings a shifting complexity to Joan....Nathaniel Davison has a disturbing goofiness.... the text crackles with purpose....leavened at times by mordant humour." - John Wells - Adelaide Theatre Guide.

"At the end of The Under Room at the Bakehouse last Saturday night I just sat there totally stunned by the power of the play and overawed by three very good perfomances. Bond has structured The Under Room like an Attic Greek tragedy and his superbly sparse writing is beautifully translated to the stage by Corey McMahon's direction. The words and the actions absorbed me totally." Myk Mykyta - Radio Adelaide

"The tale is passionate, intelligent, well directed - by Corey McMahon - and frighteningly relevant....an intelligent, bittersweet and powerfully surprising piece of theatre that explodes to reveal the base human condition. Brad Williams is marvellous....Kate Roxby is restrained and Nathaniel Davison is sturdy...All three work well together .... The Under Room is....one that should appeal to discerning theatre goers." Stephen Davenport - Australian Stage Online

"Whodunnit is never in doubt, but Edward Bond's The Under Room is a thriller by any measure.....it's what the three characters have done and are doing and the candour with which this is depicted in Corey McMahon's tightly directed and wonderfully designed productin, that make The Under Room a taut and often terrifice ride."  Peter Burdon

"The overwhelming sense of fear and the impetus of morality compromised, of civilised humanity under pressure to turn to brutality is extraordinary....Kate Roxby and Nathaniel Davison are briliant but Brad Williams in particular, offered a performance of singular emotional and intellectual dexterity" David O'Brien

"A very talented ensemble" - Matt Byrne - Sunday Mail  (speaking generally about five.point.one)

"A work of unflinching purity....compelling..." (The Guardian, Nov 2005)
"Burning with a passion and power often missing from today's theatre." (London Metro, 2005)
