Boxing Day Test

Boxing Day Test
25 Nov 2010 - 11 Dec 2010
Presented by:
Junglebean

The Boxing Day Test - a time where a nation becomes one with the couch. So is the mantra of David and Patrick, brothers, housemates and cricket lovers.

It's a time of transition for the boys - Patrick is starting a new job in corporate law, which is convenient because David's latest enterprise isn't exactly legal, the lease on their share house is up and they're both struggling with women, well, just one actually.   If that wasn't enough,  this year has added significance as it marks the first anniversary of their mother's tragic death.   And then there's Dad. .........The boys share an uneasy peace with their controlling father, John, who seems to be doing his best to bring the family back together. But are his intentions completely altruistic? Patrick seems to think so, but why doesn't David? With all the nervous anticipation of the Test itself, this year's Boxing Day Test, is going to knock everyone for six.

This powerful piece of new Australian writing is being brought to South Australian audiences by Junglebean, whose previous successes include two seasons of Jim Cartwright's Two and Neil LaBute's Autobahn (named in the Top 5 Theatre Shows of 2009 - Db Magazine)

Preview Thursday November 25 (Also FREE TIX night for Pensioners and Unemployed)

Opening Night Friday November 26.

SNIPPETS FROM REVIEWS:  (full reviews attached below)

"Director and dramaturg Duncan Graham has taken the tightly written Michael Hill script and almost wrapped it in rubber bands, so perilously taut is the result.  Patrick Frost really nails (the father) with an utterly brilliant, chilling performance. This is the cream on top of a terrific production of a riveting new play. Under Graham's direction the characters walk an emotional tight rope, rising and dipping, making one smile and breaking one's heart. Tim Overton and Nic English are compelling - a muscular and high energy production....." Samela Harris - The Advertiser

"..What an extraordinary night of theatre I had last night....it ticks all the boxes; script, direction, performance and production......I predict it will be a great success........I only wish I was reviewing so I could tell the world!" - David Grybowski - erstwhile Db reviewer

"Local professional compay, Junglebean, is not waiting for December 26th to launch its latest production - a world premiere- of local playwright Michael hill's "Boxing Day Test"...directed with great imagination and drive by Duncan Gram...it features four local actors, some of the very best of our talented pool: Nic English, Tim Overton, Patrick Frost and Renee Gentle...the sparseness and developing squalor or the (by Tammy Boden) is alarmingly authentic....there is some very innovative lighting by....Ben Flett...."Boxing Day Test" should score quite a few sixes, even a Hat Trick or two - but no ducks, or 'no balls'...Take your sun-block though. Eskies can be re-stocked at the Bakehouse bar............"Richard Flynn - Adelaide Theatre Guide

"Director Duncan Graham gives this story of two brothers' family troubles, the tension it merits, while Nic English and Tim Overton...go full throttle through their emotional problems....completing this fine cast, Patrick Frost, never better, gives the boys' grumpy, authoritative, bigoted father a magnificently menacing Pintersque quality...the wonder is that this work has lain in Hill's drawer for years, when it should have been snapped up immediately........." John Ovenden - Hills Theatre Guide

"Boxing Day Test is a crafted portrait of four human and flawed characters, some more than most, and it is the final destination of each of these characters that truly creates the production. English is the standout...Frost is in fine form...yet this is a play that bleongs to its young cst. Overton and Gentle truly come into their characters as (they) are drawn into the conflict...playing around in the bleak, near squalor of Boden's simple, pared back and realistic set Flett's lighting design is tight...Boxing Day Test is a strong, new Australian work, from a young Australian company which deserves to be seen....." Jane Howard - Australian Stage On-Line

"A run-a-minute production from one of Adelaide's most promising theatre companies.....Hill has created characters we can identify with and a conflict that needs to be resolved...Tammy Boden's deft design, Ben Flett's adaptable lighting.....complete a talented team effort...this is a quintesssentially Australian play that passes the test" - Matt Byrne - Sunday Mail

Monstrous Regiment

Monstrous Regiment - photo by Stephen Dean
Unseen Theatre Company
17 Sep 2010 - 2 Oct 2010
Presented by:
Unseen Theatre Company

ABOUT "MONSTROUS REGIMENT"

John Knox (well known Protestant Reformer of the 16th Century) is turning in his grave!   His view that women are "weak, pale, impatient, feeble, foolish, inconstant, variable, cruel and lacking the spirit of counsel and regiment" is about to be exposed for exactly what it is - MONSTROUS!

It may have taken five centuries since Knox wrote his essay entitled "The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women", as well as the enormous satirical wit of Sir Terry Pratchett, for Unseen Theatre Company to blow its own first blast of the trumpet, but here we are, ready to do battle with our own Monstrous Regiment, led by - you guessed it - a girl!

Polly Perks has to become a boy in a hurry. Cutting off her hair and wearing trousers is easy. Learning to fart and belch in public and walk like an ape takes more time......but nothing is going to stop her enlisting in the Borogravian Army to search for her lost brother.

The fact that there's a war on and their side's coming off worse doesn't scare her. Polly and her fellow recruits are suddenly in the thick of it, without any training.

All that the bunch of new recruits has on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army, a vampire with a lust for coffee, a troll, an Igor,  and a readiness to fight dirty.

As they take the war to to the heart of the enemy, they will need all the resources of the  Monstrous Regiment.

SNIPPETS FROM REVIEWS

"Nobody presents a Pratchett play like Pamela Munt and her Unseen Theatre Company. Monstrous Regiment, their latest offering at the Bakehouse Theatre is a winner....Monstrous Regiment is not just one for Discworld fans, it's a diverting and enjoyable production that's more than niche entertainment......" -
Stephen Davenport, Australian Stage Online

"Terry Pratchett is British. Very British, following the likes of Douglas Adams, Spike Milligan and the Monty Python crew in the great tradition of British absurdist humour.....Pamela Munt's direction is suitably restrained....wisely allowing the writing to remain the play's central feature.......Tom Crisp, in his stage debut, stands out as the ineptly deluded Lieutenant Blouse with a performance that is reminiscent of a young Graham Chapman or of Hugh Laurie's work in 'Black Adder'...David Geddes and ...Philip Lineton are both fantastic.....Kahlia Tutty delivers a wonderfully balanced performance ......Paul Messenger also deserves commendation for his authoritative performance...."
Aaron Nash - Db Magazine

"Pratchett fans will love this, and rightly so. This production seems to find most of the available humour and develops the, always present in Pratchett, social comment.....Kahlia Tutty is very believable as Polly.....there is a strong performance from Paul Messenger.....Samm Blackmore, Catherine Moore and Kate Hall make a great group of "lads" and Tom Crisp hits the target as Lieutenant Blouse..." -
Fran Edwards - Adelaide Theatre Guide

"This is by far one of Unseen Theatre's tightest productions...kudos to the efficient backstage crew ..who are as quiet and unobtrusive as possible.....Kahlia Tutty...is a delight to watch,,,,David Geddes steals the light as the troll.....Kristofa Cassono is nicely understated....Philip Lineton successfully reprises his role of an Igor....and doubles as nasty Prince Heinrich, showing his versatility......"
Rod Lewis - Glam Adelaide

"The strength of this production is the cast. Director Pamela Munt has picked the right mix of talent to play the various roles......the jokes (are delivered) in such a genuinely funny way......it's too easy to say that this is one for the Pratchett fans; more so this is for those that need humour in their cup of theatre ......."
Kosta Jaric - Fringe Benefits

"There are a lot of laughs in this production. There are the gender jokes of course, with a pair of socks playing a 'supporting' role throughout; the occasional fart noise; and a lot of crotch scratching, nose picking, swearing and swaggering from the girls being boys...........you could be serious about this evening out, of course. A recognisable theme is the folly of war, with many references applicable to more recent and real events......
Rosemary Cadden - Indaily

Three in the Back, Two in the Head

9 Jul 2009 - 25 Jul 2009

There are times when, for the good of the greater number, an individual must be sacrificed.  Donald Jackson, a weapons scientist for America's  defence programme, is found dead outside a church. No witnesses, no motive. When his son attempts to piece together the truth behind his father's death he is embroiled in  a world of double agents, rogue states and global paranoia.  Inspired by the real life murder of the Canadian weapons scientist Gerald Bull, Three in the Back, Two in the Head graples with the elusive nature of truth as the action shifts across conflicting versions of the past. Was Jackson a force for peace betrayed by merciless politicans? Or was he about to give America's greatest enemy the missile that could destory it?

Snippets from Reviews:

"Humanity, science and politics intertwine with intriguing twists and turns...the ensemble cast is breathtaking..an hour and a quarter of brilliant theatre - "Stephanie Johnson - Australian Stage Online

"this is a tense political thriller......nobody trusts or believes anybody else, and quite rightly..It does not take a billion dollar budget to produce quality and this production proves it. If you love top class theatre you will not want to miss this one" - Barry Lenny - Glam Adelaide and Rip It Up

"Peter Green is excellent as Donald Jackson..This show is based on fact, the premise is based on fear. Who can you trust?" - Matt Byrne - Sunday Mail

"Three in the Back Two in the Head is a well spent non-stop hour and twenty minutes of gripping theatre" - Myk Mykyta - Radio Adelaide

"A powerful piece of theatre....Director Michael Allen has built the tension carefully and delivered a riveting and discomfiting production" - Fran Edwards - Adelaide Theatre Guide

"Sherman's piece is delightfully engaging..... Allen's cast deliver....a very strong piece of theatre....Roger Newcombe is superb.....Peter Green offers a gripping picture....Michael Baldwin....is richly arrogant....Sheila Duncan....delivers a wonderful performance....Nathaniel Davison...(brings) to life the complex mix of standoffish warmth that son Paul struggles with as he seeks answers" - David O'Brien - Db Magazine

Tom the loneliest

No Strings Attached Theatre of Disability
3 Jun 2009 - 13 Jun 2009

Disturbing, irreverent (and funny)

Must finish June 13 to go to Melbourne's La Mama Theatre

In a world where mental health issues are reaching epidemic proportions, Tom the loneliest is a mirror to our time , reflecting wisdoms, observations, stories and habitual coping mechanismes of society's 'crazies'
Two men (both named Tom) inhabit a familiar yet strange world. They revisit painful memories. They explore moments between boredom and madness. They speak in languages and move in gestures uniquely their own. They're never quite sure if something just said is in the room or in their head.
A dark comedy, "Tom the loneliest" confronts isolation, depression, medication, psychosis, domestic violence, addiction and the disempowerment of modern masculinity with a disturbing irreverence that is a constant in this world of the Toms.  The result is funny, enlightening, unnerving.

Please note: There will be special signed performances on Wed June 10 and Sat June 13

Snippets from Reviews:-

"A dense and intimate atmosphere is established as Crotti and Duncan...rattle the cages of their minds...both performances are special - Crotti so fluent and elegant on the ear, Luke sometimes almost robotic in his exactitude.......Paulo Castro (Director) .....giving it a sense of flourishing high art,. (Samela Harris - The Advertiser)
"There are times when theatre's power to transfix and transform us hits us between the eyes.......there are these moments of insight, humour and sadness in " Tom the Loneliest". Duncan Luke and Julian Crotti play the Toms and their performances are sharp, funny and always entertaining........an entirely successful production which achieves everything it sets out to do.  (John Wells - Adelaide Theatre Guide)
"There's a car crach quality about this show that makes it watchable - enter at your own risk!" - (Matt Byrne - Sunday Mail)
"Tom the loneliest is a gem on many levels...Several times the opening night audience reacted with appreciative gasps; a high tribute indeed.(Myk Mykyta - Radio Adelaide)

9 Mar 2009 - 14 Mar 2009
Presented by:
Jally Productions

This comedy borrows elements from both the Commedia Del' Arte and Burlesque traditions to send up doctors, wives, brutality and death. It is for a general audience, though children may particularly enjoy the exaggerated, absurd characters.  Norman has just learnt that he's about to die and his life changes dramatically as he finally stands up to his domineering Wife, the bullying Brute and the condescending Doctor. As it turns out, there has been a mistake on the part of the doctor, but Norman will never be the same.

Making Money

Paul Briske as Moist Von Lipwig and a cast of wannabe Vetinaris
Unseen Theatre Company logo
10 Apr 2009 - 25 Apr 2009
Presented by:
Unseen Theatre Company

Reviews are here

Moist Von Lipwig is given another offer that is too good to refuse.  Who would not wish to be the man in charge of the Ankh-Morpork Royal Mint?  It’s a job for life but, as former con man Moist Von Lipwig is learning, life is not necessarily for long. The Chief Cashier is almost certainly a vampire, every day Moist has to take the Chairman for “walkies” and there’s something nameless in the cellar.  Oh, and it turns out that the Royal Mint runs at a loss.  According to Moist, that’s what happens when you base the value of your monetary system on gold.  So just what should he base it on?  Potatoes?  Dibbler’s famous pies?  Golems?  Or maybe something as simple as trust?  Moist is thinking it should be based on trust.  But that could be difficult when he is about to be exposed as a fraud.
