‘Stories? Stories are immortal!’ says Naschx'we to a group of Australian backpackers who travel to Sochi, site of the Winter Olympics. There they meet some of the local inhabitants who rue the loss of their homeland, Circassia, now colonised by Russia. An at times fractious meeting of cultural understandings ensues. While their country may no longer exist, their stories are immortal, they assure the visitors. Stories about the Narts, the greatest tribe that ever lived, whose catch-cry was to live short lives in return for great fame and courage! And then they begin to tell…
